Learn and develop your map reading and navigational skills in the beautiful Vale of Pickering and nearby Dalby Forest on courses affiliated with the National Navigational Award Scheme (NNAS).
Here at The Pheasantry we offer small groups tuition in map reading and navigation courses for the beginner and improver outdoor enthusiast as well as full or half board accommodation (available on request). Both of the Bronze and Silver courses are delivered by Dave Whitecross, a registered provider of NNAS courses and a local expert in knowledge of the local area. Course Overview: NNAS Bronze This award gives you the fundamental skills you need to safely and enjoyably walk in the valleys and rolling terrain of areas such as the Nortrh Yorkshire Moors and Yorkshire Dales. The course includes weather forecasts, route planning, map skills, grid references, compass skills, contour interpretation, navigation skills, distance estimation, relocation, essential kit and emergency procedures. Learning outcome - you will be able to plan and follow your own walks using paths and tracks (Rights of Way). Course overview: NNAS Silver This award builds upon the Bronze Award and gives you the skills you need to navigate across open country, such as the hills of the Yorkshire Dales and Peak District. The course includes the upland environment, route simplification, compass bearings, navigation strategies, relocation in a remote area, dealing with poor visibility, detailed contour interpretation and distance estimation. Learning outcome - you will be able to plan and follow your own walks across open country.
